Many famous writers of the “Romantic” period visited Bacharach including Heinrich Heine, Clemens of Brentano and Victor Hugo. This picturesque wine town "breathes the atmosphere of the Middle Ages”. A wine market first took place here in the year 1310. The view of the town is dominated by the charming “Stahleck” castle and the gothic “Wernerkapelle” (a ruined chapel) as well as the preserved town wall with a number of defensive towers. A walk up to the castle “Stahleck“ will offer you stunning views of the river Rhine and surrounding area.
Travel back to medieval times as you stroll through the delightful cobbled streets surrounded by beautiful, vine-covered buildings or enjoy a delicious glass of wine from the region in one of the many traditional wine bars.
Particularly impressive, medieval style half-timbered buildings to be found in Bacharach are the “Altes Haus” (Restaurant), historic center and the restored Town wall.
