About bacharach & the region

There is plenty to see and to do!

Many famous writers of the “Romantic” period visited Bacharach including Heinrich Heine, Clemens of Brentano and Victor Hugo. This picturesque wine town "breathes the atmosphere of the Middle Ages”. A wine market first took place here in the year 1310. The view of the town is dominated by the charming “Stahleck” castle and the gothic “Wernerkapelle” (a ruined chapel) as well as the preserved town wall with a number of defensive towers. A walk up to the castle “Stahleck“ will offer you stunning views of the river Rhine and surrounding area.

Travel back to medieval times as you stroll through the delightful cobbled streets surrounded by beautiful, vine-covered buildings or enjoy a delicious glass of wine from the region in one of the many traditional wine bars.

Particularly impressive, medieval style half-timbered buildings to be found in Bacharach are the “Altes Haus” (Restaurant), historic center and the restored Town wall.

There are scenic walking and bicycle tours along the Rhine following the B9 or B42 roads in the direction of Koblenz (north) or Mainz (south).

You can also go into the hills (Rheinhöhen) by car to experience fantastic views of the Rhine and hillside vineyards and continue onward by foot or by bicycle. Bicycle hire is possible in Bacharach. The walking trails about the Rhine rideways are the Rhein-Burgen-Weg and the Rhein-Steig.

In addition if you have a motorbike there are amazing, panoramic tours up in the hills of the surrounding area (Rheinischen Schiefergebirge) Hunsrück – Taunus -Westerwald – and Eifel areas.

If you prefer to relax with a pleasant cruise up or down the river Rhine, you can sit back and savour the delightful scenery from the comfort of a boat with commentary explaining the history of all the sights along the way.

You can enjoy swimming, surfing, canoeing and there is a landing stage for motorboats at the water sports club in Bacharach (WSV).

There are also opportunities for:

  • Golf:  Jacobsberger golf course at BoppardTennis courts:  Bacharach, Oberwesel, Boppard, and Bingen
  • Rock climbing: In the Morgenbachtal at Trechtingshausen
  • Fishing: In the Rhine
  • Rowing: Guest-rowing at the Bacharach Rowing Club where there is a facility for the laying out of rowing boats or canoes.
  • Outdoor swimming pools: Boppard, St. Goar, Kaub, Bingen, and Simmern
  • Indoor swimming pools: Ingelheim, Rheinböllen, St.Goarshausen, and Simmern
